En effet, Colette, grande lettr\u00e9e, laisse peu de place dans ses \u0153uvres \u00e0 l&rsquo;Antiquit\u00e9 grecque et romaine, au point qu&rsquo;elle semble faire suite au vers d&rsquo;Apollinaire, \u00ab<em> \u00e0 la fin tu es las de ce monde ancien<\/em> \u00bb. Si nous ouvrons le premier chapitre de <em>Sido<\/em>, ce n&rsquo;est pas l&rsquo;Antiquit\u00e9 que nous voyons, mais la Belle \u00c9poque :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab <em>Te voil\u00e0 bien fi\u00e8re, mon pauvre Minet-Ch\u00e9ri, parce que tu habites Paris depuis ton mariage. Je ne peux m&#8217;emp\u00eacher de rire en constatant combien tous les Parisiens sont fiers d&rsquo;habiter Paris, les vrais parce qu&rsquo;ils assimilent cela \u00e0 un titre nobiliaire, les faux parce qu&rsquo;ils s&rsquo;imaginent avoir mont\u00e9 en grade <\/em>\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On dirait du Balzac. Mais chez Balzac \u2013 qu&rsquo;admiraient tant les Colette, p\u00e8re et fille \u2013, l&rsquo;Antiquit\u00e9 resurgit par un interstice du texte ou un autre, au moins de mani\u00e8re ironique si l&rsquo;on songe au titre du <em>Cabinet des Antiques <\/em>ou \u00e0 la description de la boutique de l&rsquo;antiquaire au d\u00e9but de <em>La Peau de Chagrin <\/em>; chez Zola, Maupassant, Stendhal, pour ne rien dire d&rsquo;Hugo, Rimbaud et Baudelaire, les Anciens nourrissent l&rsquo;\u00e9criture et l&rsquo;imaginaire. Corneille, que Colette lisait en cachette \u00e0 la messe, en dissimulant ses trag\u00e9dies sous la couverture d&rsquo;un missel, a donn\u00e9 le souffle du Grand Si\u00e8cle \u00e0 la mati\u00e8re antique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pour interpr\u00e9ter cette absence de l&rsquo;Antiquit\u00e9, les pistes sont nombreuses, quoiqu&rsquo;elles ne semblent pas avoir occup\u00e9 la critique. On pourra sugg\u00e9rer que, \u00e0 l&rsquo;inverse de ses camarades masculins, Colette n&rsquo;a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 en pension suivre un programme scolaire o\u00f9 le latin et le grec tenaient la place majeure. Elle a appris les Lettres aupr\u00e8s de ses parents, notamment de son p\u00e8re. On pourra supposer que Colette s&rsquo;en est toujours tenue \u00e0 cette maxime sienne selon laquelle il ne faut pas d\u00e9crire mais observer.
